July 29th, 1947
Rosie/Noh and Steel Crystanthamum are out stopping crime in China town during the summer month.
El Nino/Emilio finally gets his costume. Continues his job(s).
Rosie gets to coach another actor on the movie set. She makes warding candles for the house and communication devices for everyone; one use.
It’s been a warm, humid month of July and there’s something new in town. The media doesn’t know what to call it but a name has already been coined: Smog. It’s hard to breath, and while the media thinks it must be some Russian attack or leftover munitions, scientists say its caused by all the cars.
It’s the 29th and all the Montoya children are quite excited because Eric Montoya is supposed to take the family out to see a local junior league play baseball. He bought the tickets weeks ago. Angelo is working and so not going. But the girls are going. The family will meet Ernesto at the factory.
Rosie and Stacey are both in the kitchen, helping Madame Cobb bake meat pies.
The phone rings in the living room and Joanna answers it. Maria Montoya is called down and starts talking. Her mood sours quickly. She can’t go to the game with them. Widow Rosietta is dying and there’s a vigil in her house.
And so, with assurances to Maria, Stacey and Rosie get cleaned up and then take the children to see Ernesto. It’s Friday night, so there’s lots of cars in the street; many heading out of the city. We arrive at the O’Connor factory (O’Connor Electro Plating), where Mark is also finishing up a shift. Mark and Ernesto are chatting outside the factory. The factory has been repaired since the “incident”. There’s some talk that the factory might get bought out because the owner hired a man that had a new process; a shiny electro-plated aluminum that didn’t require buffing. The man was a self-taught chemist and a fraud. There was an accident and the factory suffered an explosion.
Rosie, Stacey, and the Montoya kids arrive at the factory. The gate guard recognizes Emilio. We chat. Jorge warns us that there’ll be no game today – the rockets have fired. As most of the party watches, the rockets look like a pair of fairly large (10-15’ long) shiny metalic robots. They look streamlined, with fins on the sides of their bodies.
Mark grabs Ernesto and convinces him to get out of the building. Rosie pushes everyone into the security office.
Eventually, the two giant robots land in the courtyard of the factory.
Stacey hustles the kids out to safety while providing illusions of Emilio and Rosie.
As the robots land, the fire alarm goes off.
Mark tries to get Ernesto out of danger, deflecting most of the debris from the landing robot.
The robot lands in the courtyard and a parabolic antena comes out and circles about as it just stands there.
The other robot lands inside, and emits beams of light from its eyes. It’s walking down a hallway, looking for something systematically walking between the vats. It picks up a box, considered it, then dropped it.
Noh tries to weaken it, but she can’t seem to get a grip on its spirit. There is a presence, but it is new to her. When she focuses on its form instead of its shadow, she is able to warp it somewhat.
After sending Ernesto out to find his kids, Dynamo watches as the last of the workers break windows to escape the building. He then fires off his lightning at the robot. The little antenna spins a few times then points straight at Dynamo! It takes two steps and takes a wild swing at Dynamo, who ducks and weaves out of the way.
He fires again! Over-handing lightning into it. The robot outside reacts violently to the blows, and the antenna moves around. It shoots in Dynamo’s vicinity, but misses.
reaches out and uses her anger to attack it. Claws reach out and, at first they seem to strike within the monster, then they harden and metal shrieks. The darkness seeps into the robot, through the cracks in its armor, they take hold of its innards and tear it apart. It falls; Dymano side-steps it.
El Nino Figures out how to mix the acids from the vats and throws them at the robot! It seems to have an effect. El Nino grabs a fire ax and runs up the wall and along the beams. He finds a cable with a good amount of slack and then chops away at the electrical cable; he swings down on the cable and gets close enough to zap it full of electricity. It begins to shake and shimmy then every light in the building goes off as the breaker gives way. One of the robot’s eyes bursts, then it begins to lift its arm.
He stays low and runs around behind the robot, who is still firing. He finds a welding torch sitting on the floor near the back door. He grabs the torch, opens the valve, runs up its backside, and jams the canister in the robot’s empty eye socket before running away to hide! But there is no earth-shattering kaboom!
The robot inside tries to rip out the canister and fails. It stops and a long antenna goes up. It then stops.
Grabs a pair of burning overalls, runs up the robot again and jams the burning clothing into the socket. He then waits for it to catch fire. He then outruns the explosion.
The robot’s head blows up. The blinking light atop the antenna stops blinking. Luckily, none of the fire falls into the vats. And it falls over.
El Nino rejoins his family who is hustling away from the area. Ernesto realizes that he forgot to punch out.
While we wait for the cops, El Nino goes looking for “suspicious” boxes.
Domino stands outside, waiting for the cops. Noh remains unseen. Mark goes to mingle with the crowd.
Noh tries to figure out what the robot might have originally been heading towards. She goes into the crewman’s building and looks around.
Domino speaks to the police and then the reporters. She warns them that she heard gunfire from inside the main building.
Eventually a black car pulls up. After two men come out and speak to the police. One comes to speak to Domino. Agent Carrell.
He asks to meet her and her compatriots at the top of city hall 10 pm; to discuss a matter of national security – sabotage. Domino disappears and re-appears on the other side of the street as Stacey. Noh joins her and reappears as Rosie.
When Mr. O’Connor arrives, he is flabbergasted and swearing that he is innocent! That he’s not hired any robot employees.
Mark waits around until he’s told it’s safe to leave.
Rosie and Stacey meet up with Ernesto as they have the tickets. Mark heads home and the Montoya’s and the girls have a quiet, normal evening. It’s a fun baseball game and Jorge even catches a ball.
Once home, Stacey ask Madame Cobb about the men in black. She falls into a trance and says “One will Betray You Eventually”.
The group gathers and talks and agrees to go to the meeting.
